With New York Fashion Week in full gear, many trends are starting to form before our eyes. Follow this week’s Fall/Winter Trend guide, so you won’t be the bearer of trends past.

The cold Fall/Winter season of fashion is slowly approaching, its time to move the shorts and tees out of the way and bring in the pants and sweaters. Before you make those wardrobe transitions be sure to check out the latest trends for the winter months.

Trending for this year’s Fall/Winter fashion season are materials such as velvet, leather and fur, and an array of colors such as mauve, oxblood, olive green and golden oak. I’m defiantly not speaking of your grandmother’s ten inch fox fur with the feet and head attached. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) just wouldn’t find that ethical, so this year’s designers are taking the ethical route and introducing a vast range of dyed faux furs. Get this year’s favored Haute fur look so you too can be Fall/Winter ready. Wondering what you can pair fur with to give you that movie star glow? Check out a look created exclusively for you.

Now that you have your fur in check, let’s get into these leathers. Like the furs you should always veer towards the faux leathers. Think about Old McDonald’s farm, what would it be without a moo moo. Remember that leather is a versatile material that can be worn with various materials and patterns. While shopping for your leather jackets, boots and skirts be sure to stick with the items that can be worn with everything. Nothing screams Fall/Winter like a nice pair of black boots. For men a black Chukka boot can be worn year round if paired with a well fitted pair of jeans, v-neck t-shirt and a bold color bomber jacket. Here you have an ensemble that will definitely grant you access into any fashion event. Now for the ladies going into the Fall/Winter season you can take those black knee boots and pair them with a printed wrap dress (be sure to thank Diane von Furstenberg) and you will be sure to slay. If you want to get a bit bold, mix and match those leather goods with some sort of animal print, and you’ll be sure to demand attention without saying a word.

Caution only the true Fashionistas and Fashionmistas should read beyond this point. For years we have looked at velvet as something that should have been left in the back of a 1970 Cadillac Deville, but it was resurrected and brought to the runway by some of your favorite designers such as: Gucci, Jill Stuart, Monse, M. Martin and Laquan Smith. Velvet is back and from the looks of it, it is here to stay. When you shop for velvet be sure to focus on the versatility of the piece you pick. You may find it very difficult to pair those pieces with items that you already have in your closet. Pick up a solid black piece, maybe a velvet vest that could be worn with everything. Velvet is your friend that’ll keep you warm while you annihilate every fashion guru that crosses your path.

Fall/Winter is in Spring/Summer is out, so it is now time to start wearing Fall colors. One Fall color that is peaking the trend chart is olive green. Yes, the same olive green that you see on the uniforms of armed military soldiers. Be careful with what you pair your greens with because if you pair it with the wrong piece you will be sure to blend in with the rest of the foliage. Ladies, pair those green skinny jeans with a nude/taupe bootie and an oversized sweater. While putting on this ensemble be sure to take the advice of Coco Chanel and spray a little number 5 on your neck to acquire the most sophisticated gentleman. Fellas, I promise I will not put you in green pants, but a olive green bomber jacket, fitted black slacks and your favorite graphic tee will definitely give you that dapper day or night look. Be sure to stay in style this Fall/Winter season by following the latest trends. If you follow these trends you will demand attention without saying a word. In the words of the late great Bill Cunningham, “Fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life.”
