Organization Spotlight: IMPACT Community Service Organization

Impact Community Service Organization was started on the campus of Alcorn State University (ASU) in the Fall of 2017 with Tytiana Smith as Founder and President and James Herrington II and Ke’Erricka Baxton as Co-Founders. From its inception, this organization has been geared towards strengthening surrounding communities while promoting personal growth and self-efficacy of each member.

Tytiana Smith is an Alcorn Alumna who is now employed as a Registered Nurse at a hospital in East Texas.

“As a Sophomore, I was inspired to start this amazing organization because there weren’t any other non-Greek organizations geared specifically towards volunteerism and community service. As college students, I knew a lot of us were preparing to attend professional school and join other organizations on campus, so I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to gain community service hours while giving back to the surrounding communities,” says Smith.

What is Impact?

This organization serves those in need of resources to help strengthen every person. It believes that by strengthening the citizens in the communities that they serve, they in-turn impact a brighter tomorrow. Since 2017, IMPACT has served the areas of Port Gibson, Vicksburg, Natchez, and Jackson, Mississippi by donating socks to nursing homes and hygiene kits to the homeless, read to children in elementary schools, done campus clean-ups, stadium clean-ups, and made goodie bags for health care workers.

During the pandemic, IMPACT equipped the student body with masks and hand sanitizer. For midterm and final exams, they provided goodie bags and notes of affirmation for the student body as well.

“My experience so far within IMPACT has been amazing. I got to help so many people through acts of service and various donations. Knowing I helped someone through their time of need is the best part. I’ve met so many good people. Because of my hard work and dedication, I was named President for the 2022-2023 school year,” says Kaylan Richard.
