On Wednesday, January 25, 2017, the new found P.O.W.E.R. organization held its first membership drive at 7:00 pm in the J.D. Boyd Library Auditorium.

P.O.W.E.R. is an acronym for Power of Women Expecting Results. The primary goal of this organization is to encourage, uplift and empower college women. P.O.W.E.R. was officially established on Alcorn State University’s campus by Carlisa Jenkins during the Fall 2016 semester. The purpose of this membership drive was to inform women about P.O.W.E.R. and all that it has to offer but more importantly, encourage them to join.

Carlisa Jenkins, a Junior Psychology major from Vicksburg, Mississippi says she is a firm believer in the importance of empowering women and is more than elated to have brought an organization such as P.O.W.E.R. to Alcorn.

“I started P.O.W.E.R. because I am all about the betterment of women. I believe that the women should support each other versus tearing each other down. As young ladies, we have multiple odds stacked us and to conquer those odds as women, we must come together and unite as one. P.O.W.E.R.’s purpose is to bring out confidence in ladies, be a support system to one another, network, give back to the community, mentor junior high through high school girls, and host events that aim towards the betterment of women,” said Jenkins.

The deadline to join P.O.W.E.R. is February 15, 2017.
