February is commonly recognized as Black History Month which celebrates the achievements of black Americans and the central role they played in United States history. This year in honor of Black History Month, P.O.W.E.R. (Power of Women Expecting Results) presented its first “Phenomenal Woman Power Challenge”. The “Phenomenal Woman Power Challenge” was held Wednesday, February 22, 2017, via the popular social media outlet Instagram. The primary goal of the “Phenomenal Woman Power Challenge” was to simply serve as a reminder to all women that they are phenomenal, powerful and worthy in every way possible.
To participate in the “Phenomenal Woman Power Challenge” students were simply required to take a picture of themselves that made them feel like a “phenomenal woman”, post it on their social media page and use the hashtag #phenomenalwomanpowerchallenge and tag@powerofwomen_expectingresults.
Carlisa Jenkins, a Junior Psychology major from Vicksburg, Mississippi, believes that challenges such as the “Phenomenal Woman Power Challenge” brings the perfect blend of positivity to social media that we so need in today’s society.
Jenkins stated, “The purpose of the “Phenomenal Woman Power Challenge” was to bring something positive to social media, honor black history and promote self-love. I was more than stunned by the amount of people that actually participated in this challenge and the positive feedback we received. As the founder of P.O.W.E.R., it is my true heart’s desire to fulfill the purpose of this orginization which is promoting the empowerment and betterment of women.”
