On Wednesday, February 21, 2018 from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Gamma Phi Chapter, went red for the heart in the lobby of the Dr. Clinton Bristow Jr. Dining Facility by focusing their attention on the heart during Heart Health Awareness Day.

Heart disease is a leading cause of death for men and women and February marks American Heart Month which is a great time to commit to a healthy lifestyle and make small changes that can lead to a lifetime of heart health.

Everyone who walked into the cafeteria received a sheet or sheets with different facts about the heart. Some of the facts consisted of what are the different diseases of the heart and what causes them. There were two poster boards set up that also gave facts about maintaining a healthy heart.  Some key points to achieve this were:

1) Be smoke free

2) Manage your blood cholesterol

3) Manage your blood pressure

4) Be physically active

5) Achieve and maintain a healthy weight

The ladies also encouraged the student body to get active by exercising daily.  “Exercise daily and drink a lot of water. Walking helps a lot because it keeps the blood circulating,” stated Student Government Association (SGA) President and Senior Accounting major Patrick Herbert.
