THE CAMPUS CHRONICLE

Privilege

Where do I start on this issue that grows in my own race?
It doesn’t sit well or have a sweet taste.

As kids they’re told, “Oh you’re light, so you’re white.”
But these naps say otherwise, cut ‘em, and you’re hiding your black side?

So much pain in this blessing, or should I say privilege.
Same skin secured Obama’s win, two shades darker, doesn’t have this advantage.

Obama and I share a birthday, so maybe I’m destined for greatness too,
Or maybe it’s my lightskin privilege. Should I be ashamed? Are you?
