Organization Spotlight: The Royal Braves Dance Team

Not everyone has the courage to stand out and embrace their true dreams, but Aubre Shivers and Chenel Martin took their place here at Alcorn State University (ASU) and founded ‘The Royal Braves Dance Team’ on October 14th, 2021 to showcase their talents not only around the University but for everyone around the world to see. Shivers and Martin, both apart of the Alcorn family, stood up for their passion for dance and chased every chance they had to create an amazing opportunity for other dancers around the campus.

Royal, within ‘The Royal Braves Dance Team’, is an acronym. R is for Respect. In order to be a skilled dancer, you have to have respect not only for yourself but for other dancers and coaches around you. O is for Optimistic. To be optimistic is to be hopeful of what your future as a dancer presents. Y is for youthful. Never lose sight of being who you are. Stand still. Try to stay as young as you can because when the time comes for adulthood, you have to make sure you’re 100% ready. A is for Ambition. To be ambitious is to be knowingly worthy of your abilities. And lastly, L is for Loyal. Remain loyal to your peers, yourself, and your commitment to dance.

The group focuses more on sisterhood than dance. The purpose of the team is to create a profound relationship with each member so that in the future they will know that they have formed a relationship so strong that it will never break apart.

Ashley Bell, a Criminal Justice major from Blytheville, Arkansas stated, “I joined The Royal Braves Dance Team to be a part of a sisterhood and to continue doing what I love throughout college.”
