Staff Spotlight: Jerome Myles, Sr.

Jerome Myles, Sr. was born and raised in Natchez, Mississippi and graduated from Natchez College. He resides in the Cannonsburg community where he’s been located with his family for over 20 years. He’s been blessed to have had many jobs during his career, but he is most passionate about radio. He began his career in radio when he was 18 at WNAT in Natchez, and from there he moved over to WMIS/WTYJ where he worked for over 40 years. He’s also had stints at WKPG 1320 AM in Port Gibson, Mississippi, WKPG in Natchez and is currently at Alcorn State University (ASU) with WPRL 91.7 FM. He’s married to Elizabeth Benjamin from Pattison, Mississippi who is the Associate Director with Alcorn’s Mississippi Small Farm and Agribusiness Center. 

They have two sons, Kobe and Tyler. Kobe is a Senior here at ASU majoring in Geospatial Engineering Technology. Myles has three other children Dedrick, a graduate of Natchez High School, Jerome, Jr. a graduate of Alcorn that majored in Mass Communications, and Devyn, who made history as being the first female drum major in 24 years at Tennessee State University. 

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH ALCORN? 24 years

WHAT DOES YOUR JOB ENTAIL? I am the Music/Program Director and Assistant to the Operations Manager. My duties include making sure that the music is put into the computer and in rotation for air play on the radio and I am also responsible for all of the programming for WPRL.

WHEN YOU’RE AT WORK, HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE YOURSELF? Because of the love that I have for radio it’s rather easy. The music that I play on my radio show is helping someone that might be having a rough day,

IN TERMS OF SUCCESSES, WHICH ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?Winning the Mississippi Statewide Gospel Announcer of the Year award 4 times is awesome because you are competing with some of the best announcers in the state.

WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE THAT YOU CAN GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO JUST STARTED THEIR CAREER AT ALCORN? You should do your best at the job that you were hired to do and from a student’s perspective remember that you are there to get a quality education which is first and foremost. You should enjoy Alcorn while you are here and take advantage of every opportunity that you get.
