SWAC Issues Sanctions on Alcorn Football

The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) began its Spring 2021 Football regular season opener on the weekend of February 26th and 27th. Conspicuously absent were the 2019 SWAC Champions, the Alcorn State University Braves. Alcorn was scheduled to kick off their six game conference only schedule on Saturday, February 27th on the road against the Alabama A&M Bulldogs.

Unfortunately, the Braves announced on February 9th that they would not be participating in Spring football due to COVID-19 concerns and with that announcement the SWAC acted accordingly with repercussions. The Conference issued a statement which said that the games affected by Alcorn’s opting out would be considered no contest forfeitures with the opposing team receiving the victory.

The SWAC also stated that the Fall 2021 schedule would be rearranged where teams (Mississippi Valley State University, Alabama State University, and Southern University) that Alcorn were schedlued to play at home would now be away games for the Braves. This decision was based on existing Conference policy.
