Sweet Victory

In order for the Alcorn State University (ASU) Braves (6-4, 5-2) to remain as a formidable contender for the 2021 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) title they desperately needed to beat the Western Division leading Prairie View A&M University (PVU) Panthers (7-2, 6-1) on Saturday, November 13th at Spinks-Casem Stadium at 2:00 pm.

The Panthers opened up the first quarter by scoring first at the 11:56 mark when wide receiver Tre’jon Spillar caught a 44-yard pass from quarterback Jawon Pass but kicker Luis Reyes missed an extra point making the score 6-0, Panthers.

Alcorn got on the board in the second quarter at the 13:04 mark when wide receiver LeCharles Pringle caught a 57-yard pass from quarterback Felix Harper and with kicker Noah Kiani’s PAT (Point After Attempt) the score was now 6-7, Braves. PVU responded at the 9:56 mark when Reyes booted a 23-yard field goal straight between the uprights to make the score 9-7, Panthers. The Braves scored 3 more times at the 3:43, 1:06 and :25 second mark making the score 9-24, Braves.

The Braves began the third quarter by scoring at the 10:27 mark when Harper scampered into the end zone and with Kiani’s extra point the score was now 9-31, Braves. The Panthers answered that score with one of their own at the 7:43 mark when wide receiver Antonia Mullins caught a 30-yard pass from Pass and with a successful Reyes kick the score was now 16-31, Braves.

The fourth quarter saw the Panthers score twice at the 10:33 and 7:07 mark but it was too little too late as the Braves held on for a 29-31 victory.

Statistical leaders were Harper who completed 18 of 28 passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns, Anderson who had 15 carries for 60 yards and 1 touchdown and Pringle who had 4 receptions for 119 yards and 1 touchdown.

The Braves take on in-state rival and 2021 Eastern Division Champions, the Jackson State University Tigers (9-1, 7-0) on Saturday, November 20th at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium at 1:00 pm.
