Tau Beta Sigma Celebrates “MusIKEal Week”

The Theta Gamma Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma (TBS) National Honorary Band Sorority celebrated their First Annual “MusIKEal Week”. The events took place October 16th – October 20th. Tau Beta Sigma used this week to enhance the campus with musical knowledge, interact with individuals outside of the band and to gain national attention from their National Board.

On Monday, October 16, TBS went to the Alcorn State University Child Development Center and set up a “Musical Instrument Petting Zoo”. This community service project was done so that the children at the daycare center could see first-hand what certain instruments looked like, felt like and sounded like. Instruments such as the snare drum, baritone, trumpet, and saxophone were all displayed at the petting zoo. The children were allowed to have a little fun and play on a few of the instruments before Tau Beta Sigma played them the University’s fight song.

Tuesday, October 17th, brought about the “Hot Dog Eating Contest” that took place on the Campus Plaza. It was an open event, so everyone was allowed to participate. The winner of the contest, Tony Austin, gobbled down 12 hot dogs in less than 10 minutes. He, along with 9 other participants, all left with their stomachs full. Treasure Stevenson, 24, a Senior Biology major from Jackson, Mississippi stated, “I can’t believe they ate that many hot dogs. I would definitely be sick. Just watching them made my stomach hurt.”

On Wednesday, October 18, Tau Beta Sigma did “Band Hall Cleanup”. The band hall’s floors were swept, the tables were cleaned off and the musical library was reorganized.

Thursday, October 19th, was “Post it Up Thursday”. This event allowed the sorority members to go out and mingle with their fellow colleagues outside of the band. Individuals were asked to take pictures with their favorite TBS member and post them on social media. There were over 50 photos taken.

Friday, October 20th, was the “Hot Wing Plate Sale”. This event was open to all of those who wanted to place an order. A preorder plate was $5 and to purchase a plate the day of was $7. The turnout was very beneficial and was a wonderful way to close out the Chapter’s week.

Zion McThomas, Theta Gamma President, stated, “The week itself was a wonderful experience to share our love for music with the Alcorn community.”
