The Brave Family Homecoming

Alcorn’s 2018 Homecoming is one for the books. There were many activities held on campus for students, alumni and faculty to enjoy. The events began Sunday, September 30th and ran through October 7th. This year’s Homecoming name was ‘The Brave Family Homecoming’.

The first Homecoming event was a Gospel Explosion which happened Sunday, September 30th in the Oakland Chapel located on Alcorn’s main campus. The Explosion lasted from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm. Later on in the day there was also a water event called ‘Wet N Wild’ that took place from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on the Campus Green.

Monday, October 1st brought Movie Day which was in the Student Union Ballroom at 10:30 am and the ‘Wild n Out’ Comedy Show hosted by Kerwin Claiborne which was held in the Campus Union Ballroom at 8:00 pm. Both events were filled to capacity and enjoyed thoroughly by its attendees.

Tuesday, October 2nd presented Trap Karaoke at 2:00 pm in the Student Union Ballroom and at 6:00 pm at the Campus Plaza there was a Bourbon Street themed Block Party.

Wednesday, October 3rd presented a plethora of events which began with Chicken Wednesday at 11:00 am where everyone gets dressed in their best clothes and goes to the Dr. Clinton Bristow Jr. Dining facility to enjoy their lunch and converse with friends. Later at 6:00 pm was the Student Government Association’s (SGA) Inauguration of the 92nd SGA President, Robert Tatum. Laser Tag/Game night was held right after the Inauguration from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm in the Student Union. 

Thursday, October 4th brought the Coronation of the 92nd Miss Alcorn, Moriah Batiest, which was held in the David L. Whitney HPER Complex. Family, friends, and students joined Batiest to celebrate her new role as Miss Alcorn. “It was my first Coronation so I was pretty thrilled to be apart of it. It was beautiful and I enjoyed being there. I look forward to participating next year,” stated Xiandria Patrick, a Criminal Justice major from Forest, Mississippi.

Friday, October 5th presented the Greek Step Show which was held in the E.E. Simmons Gymnasium at 7:00 pm. Each fraternity and sorority from the ‘Divine Nine’ competed to win the event. The sorority that came in first place was the Sisters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and the fraternity that came in first place was the Brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. “I felt like winning first place was a culmination of all of the hard work and late practice sessions we were having. It was great to see all of the hard work we were putting into the show result in us winning. It will definitely be a memory for me when I graduate,” stated  Tyrique Dorsey, a Criminal Justice major from Lake Providence, Louisiana and member of the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma.

Saturday, October 6th brought the annual Homecoming game which took place at 2:00 pm at Spinks-Casem Stadium. The Alcorn State University Braves faced the Hornets of Alabama State. The game became one to remember by going into 5 overtimes which is unprecedented. Unfortunately, the Braves fell short with the final score being 28-25.

Homecoming activities ended on Sunday, October 7th with Stadium Campus Cleanup which began at 8:00 am. The final event for Homecoming 2018 was The T.R.E.N.D. 5th year Reunion Fashion Show which was held in the Davey L. Whitney HPER Complex at 4:00 pm.
