Dear Zari:
I have a close friend who is a great person. Her name is Tori. Tori is funny and for the most part great to be around. There is one thing about her that almost ruins everything about her, and it’s the negativity that she carries around within her everywhere she goes. She always points out the negative aspects of every situation and gives, although it’s never asked for, her disgruntled opinion. No one is safe from her cruel criticisms, and I mean no one. I’ve even seen her berate her own mother. Because she is such a great friend, in some areas, I really don’t know how to deal with this situation. What should I do Zari? Should I remain friends with her or should I cut my loses and dump her as a friend? I really need your help in this situation.
Sincerely,
A Tired Friend
Dear A Tired Friend:
I totally get how challenging it can be to deal with a friend’s constant negativity. It’s like a dark cloud hanging over everything, right? It’s great that you recognize the positive aspects of your friend Tori, such as her humor and the fun times you have together. However, her negativity seems to be taking a toll on you and others around her.
In situations such as this, open and honest communication is key. Have you tried having a heart-to-heart conversation with Tori about how her negativity affects you and others? Let her know how her constant criticism and negative outlook makes you feel. Sometimes people aren’t even aware of the impact they have on others. By expressing your concerns, you might give her a chance to reflect and make positive changes.
However, if you’ve already had these conversations and Tori hasn’t shown any willingness to change her behavior, it might be worth considering whether this friendship is healthy for you. Surrounding yourself with positive and uplifting people can have a huge impact on your own well-being. Remember, you deserve to be around friends who bring out the best in you and support you.
Ultimately, the decision to remain friends or end the friendship is up to you. Trust your instincts and prioritize your own happiness and mental well-being. It’s important to surround yourself with people who uplift and inspire you.
