THE CAMPUS CHRONICLE

The World Was Young and So Were We

I ran with the kids that use to say,

“We are going to meet in the park at 3.”

Then we would go play hide and seek.

They would yell “ready or not here I come.”

But see they never found me.

We would double dutch with the two jump ropes

singing, “one for the money two for the show.”

I don’t remember the rest but they would say, “LET’S GO

LET’S GO!”

We were the kids that use to sing “JIG A LO JIG JIG ALO.”

As I said the world was young and so were we.

We never walked on the sidewalk, we always walked in the street.

WHY?

Because we knew we were safe cutting through the alley and hopping over the gate.

Just in case we happened to get chased cause the rule was to never look behind you,

but go your own way.

Oh yeah if you asked us as long as we made it in the house alive

then yeah today was a good day.

As I said the world was young and so were we.

See in the basement was the first time I saw my uncle roll up something the color green.

That white stuff he use to put in those plastic bags,

I use to think it was earrings

Cause it was always shining so crystal and clear.

So in my mind it was only right to place it in my right ear.

As I said the world was young and so were we.

I can remember having to square up with chicks after school

cause they didn’t like the fact that I use to get A’s and B’s.

I can hear my grandma screaming in the background

talking about, “You betta not lose this fight or when you come in this house I promise you I’m going to smack you with all my might.”

Cause I grew up to tell the truth, keep it real, and forget what everybody thinks about you.

Speak on how you really feel.

See as long as I did this then it was a beautiful day in my neighborhood.

NO!

I said as long as I did this then it was a beautiful day in my

NEIGHBOR

HOOD!

Cause our house and their house was always at each other’s throats.

That night if my cousin wouldn’t have come back to his right mind

he would have pulled that trigger and those bullets would have made the man next door

CHOKE.

As I said the world was young and so were we.

Now I just gave yall a sneak peek into my childhood.

Let me repeat myself just in case some of y’all misunderstood.

THE WORLD WAS YOUNG AND SO WERE WE!

That’s why you should never tell a person to judge a book by its cover

cause unlike you they may actually have the heart to open up and read

“THE WORLD WAS YOUNG AND SO WERE WE!”

“ME!”
