Tigers Shock Braves in Loss

Utter shock is the only way to describe the Texas Southern University (TSU) Tigers (3-7, 2-5) upset victory over the (at the time) Western Division leading Alcorn State University (ASU) Braves (6-4, 5-2) in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). The Braves played a special Sunday game on November 12th at 2:00 pm in Shell Energy Stadium in Houston, Texas where they possibly played their worst game of the season.

The Tigers came out swinging in the first quarter by putting up two scores at the 10:02 and 4:17 mark making the score early 14-0, Tigers. Alcorn responded with 52 seconds remaining in the quarter when Running back Jarveon Howard scored on a 7-yard scamper into the endzone and with Kicker Noah Kiani’s successful kick the score was 14-7, Tigers.

The second quarter was dominated by TSU when they scored three times at the 13:28, 5:42, and 3:07 mark making the score before halftime 35-7, Tigers.

The third quarter only had one score and it was done by TSU with 26 seconds left in the quarter to make the score 38-7, Tigers.

The Braves finally got back on the score board in the fourth quarter at the 13:09 mark when Kiani nailed a 22-yard field goal making the score 38-10, Tigers. The Tigers scored again at the 7:12 mark making the final score 44-10, Tigers.

The game leaders saw Quarterback Aaron Allen go 19 of 40 for 259-yards with 1 interception, Howard had 15 carries for 41-yards and 1 touchdown while Wide Receiver Tevarrius Adams had 2 receptions for 63-yards. The Braves had 318 total yards, 2 turnovers and 14 1st downs.

The Braves next game will be Saturday, November 18th, at 2:00 pm against the Jackson State University Tigers (7-3, 5-2) at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson, Mississippi. The game can be heard on WPRL 91.7 FM or wprl.org. The Braves can still win the West next week with a win against Jackson State and a Prairie View A&M University (5-5, 5-2) loss against the Alabama State University Hornets (6-3, 5-2).
