Zeta Chapter Hosts Spades Tournament

Hosting the first Spades Tournament in a considerable amount of time, the Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. sought to offer students at Alcorn State University the opportunity to win a monetary prize while getting to know other students on campus. Using the most well known card game in America, Zeta Chapter was able to generate a good revenue with $5 per team and $3 per person from the Tournament.

Shamesha Martin, Zeta Chapter Second Vice President, expressed, “Students were able to interact with people they don’t normally interact with while playing a game that everyone enjoys.”

Held in the James L. Bolden Campus Union Multipurpose Room on February 16, 2017, the Tournament included teams of two who battled it out for the winning title. Teams participating in the Tournament were expected to win two out of three games before moving on to the next round, while following four basic rules which were, No talking across the table, no reneging or 3 books will be taken, joker, joker, deuce, deuce is the game, and play to win.

Winners of the tournament were Sophomore General Studies major, Brandan Jones, and Junior Animal Science major, Rashad Lanus. They both received $25 Visa gift cards for winning.

Lanus stated, “I was a little nervous of the competition in the room because people looked as though they knew what they were doing, so I feel really good about winning. I can’t wait to come back to the next Tournament and win again.”

Jones added, “I was nervous because I didn’t know if I was good or not. I look forward to the next Tournament.”
