The “Dovely” ladies of the Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. at Alcorn State University celebrated their Founder’s Week with several activities on and off campus. The week kicked off on Monday, January 11th and concluded with a Founder’s Day Program on Saturday, January 16th. Activities for the week were based on the founding principles of the organization which are Service, Finer Womanhood, Scholarship, and Sisterly Love.

The ladies began the week passing out inspiring quotes to fellow students on ‘The Yard’.

As Tuesday, January 12th, was designated as Service Day, members of Zeta Chapter volunteered at Jefferson County Elementary School to tutor elementary and middle school students after school. Tutoring lasted from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm.

Wednesday’s Finer Womanhood event was “finer”. Several Alcorn students attended the etiquette class that was held in Building C. There they were taught and quizzed on table settings, online etiquette (netiquette), the proper handshake, and better ways to speak on something you don’t know in class. Refreshments were classily served afterwards.

“This function taught me a lot including how to properly say ‘I don’t know’ without being rude. I really enjoyed myself, and whoever missed the program, missed out,” stated graduating senior from Port Gibson, Shantavian O’Quinn.

On Thursday, January 14th, the members of Zeta Chapter hosted a GRE, Praxis, and resume workshop. Attendees were given information about the examinations and received practice questions from both subject sections of the GRE. They were also given tips on formal resumes and cover letters.

Friday’s Sisterly Love event was a closed affair amongst the members of Zeta Chapter.

Founder’s Week came to an end on Saturday, January 16th with a Founder’s Day Program held in the Oakland Memorial Chapel. The event was hosted by members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. from the undergraduate and graduate chapters of Alpha Alpha Zeta Zeta, Zeta, and Alpha Iota Sigma. The guest speaker for the occasion was the Zeta Mississippi State Director, Ms. Vanessa R. Banks. The service began at 2:00 pm and ended at 3:00 pm followed by fellowship.

“This week was an overall success. We started the week hoping students would learn what our organization is about apart from the normal activity that they see from us. By the end of the week, students saw just that,” said Shanteria Crockett, Vice President of Zeta Chapter.

Ms. Crockett also expressed, “Though this week was set on our principles, we have two more weeks coming up this semester. We would like to see more participation from not only females, but males as well.”
