5 Tips to Help College Students with Mental Health

While in college, at one particular point in time, we all will need some type of support. Sometimes it can get hard trying to balance academics, personal life and career goals. I struggle sometimes too. This is why I created 5 tips that will help you with your mental health.

PRACTICE REGULAR EXERCISING
Physical activity releases endorphins which have mood-boosting effects so you don’t feel sad, depressed or moody. It helps reduce stress and improves sleep which is really important for the body. Also, physical activity not only helps with your mood but helps you feel good as well.

NUTRITIOUS MEALS
We are all in college and we love to eat snacks or just grab a bite to eat but watching what
you put in your body is important. A balanced diet provides essential nutrients that support brain
function and emotional stability. So put down the ice cream and hot chips and exchange it for some fruit and vegetables.

PROPER SLEEP
You need to get enough sleep. I know we sometimes go to parties late at night and don’t come in until early mornings, go to sleep, then wake right back up for an 8:00 am class. But not prioritizing sleep can cause sleep deprivation which can worsen mood swings, anxiety, and depression. So, try to aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night.

MINDFULNESS
Practicing mindfulness can help you become more aware of your thoughts and feelings, reducing stress and promoting relaxation. So, relax and do something to distract yourself from thinking all of the time.

CONNECTING WITH OTHERS
Get out of your dorm room and get around people. Go to the cafe and speak to different individuals. Take yourself on a date in a different city so you can have social interaction. Mingling with people can help combat your feelings of loneliness and isolation and it also provides a sense of belonging and support.

I hope that these help and remember that no one will love you more than you will love yourself.
