Applying to graduate school can feel overwhelming, but with proper planning and organization, the process becomes much more manageable.
- DEFINE YOUR GOALS
Before diving into applications, you need to ask yourself a few questions such as, “Why do I want to go to graduate school?”, “What career path do I hope to follow? “and “Which programs align with my academic and professional interests?” Understanding your goals will help you choose the right schools and programs.
- RESEARCH PROGRAMS THOROUGHLY
Each graduate program has unique strengths, faculty, and opportunities. When researching programs, you need to look at the program curriculum and what it specializes in. The location is a big thing to look at, plus the campus culture. Make sure you can apply for scholarships as well. Many universities offer virtual or in person open houses where you can interact with faculty and current students
- SECURE STRONG LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATIONS
Most programs require two to three letters of recommendation. Choose recommenders who know you well academically or professionally. Professors, research supervisors, and employers are great options. Request letters at least a month in advance and provide a summary of your achievements to help them write a compelling recommendation.
- WRITE A STANDOUT PERSONAL STATEMENT
Your statement of purpose (or personal statement) is a critical part of your application. It should explain why you are interested in the program, what makes you a great fit, and what you will bring to the program. Talk about highlights of your academic and professional experiences. Write each statement to the specific program instead of writing a generic essay.
- WEIGH YOUR OFFERS AND MAKE A DECISION
Applying to graduate school is a challenging but rewarding journey. By planning, staying organized, and putting your best foot forward in each application, you’ll increase your chances of getting into the program that best fits your academic and career aspirations.
