It’s been a long time coming. Sixteen years to be exact. But Dr. Dre’s new album is finally here. It’s entitled “Compton” and was released on iTunes and Apple Music on August 7th. The album sold 286,000 copies in its debut release and was number 2 on Billboard Magazine’s Top 200 chart. Although it’s entitled “Compton” it is in no way to be confused as the official soundtrack of the movie Straight Outta Compton which debuted on August 14th.
The album features 16 tracks and is 1 hour long and for all intents and purposes is extremely good and well worth the wait. Some artists featured on the album are Xzibit, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Eminem, John Connor of Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Records, The Game and Jill Scott to name a few. What makes this a superb album is because it’s new and fresh and current. Dr. Dre and the featured artist have very good chemistry throughout the entire album.
“Compton” has several tracks that must be mentioned such as ‘Talking to My Diary’ which is a somewhat sentimental track where Dr. Dre discusses his past and him getting emotional over Eazy-E’s death and the sacrifices that he’s had to endure to get where he is today. ‘It’s All on Me’ features BJ the Chicago Kid and he totally slays this track. The instrumentals and singing on this song are a must hear. The next track that has to be heard is ‘Darkside/Gone’ which features Kendrick Lamar. In the song it is very dark and torturous. Lamar gives some of his best lyrics on this one that could possibly be a candidate for Song of the Year. The next mentionable track is ‘Animals’ which is a very moving cut that discusses how the media is and how it exploits a lot of the problems black people have been going through recently.
The track featuring The Game is entitled ‘Just Another Day’ and it is pure fire. It should have gone longer and maybe had a more memorable hook but The Game did his thing lyrically. The track with the best beat on the album was entitled ‘Genocide’ which will definitely stick in your mind for days to come. It is by far one of the most progressive instrumentals on any album this year.
The “Compton’ album is one of Dr. Dre’s best works of art. He has the innate ability to bring out the best in other artists and it is very apparent in this album. This album features some of the best versus not only for a rap album but for any genre of album. “Compton” receives 8 stars out of 10 stars and is money well spent. As a consumer you will not be disappointed.
