Album Review: Playboy

I recently got into Tory Lanez on a deeper level. Before, I only had a handful of his songs in rotation, but now I realize just how much I’ve been sleeping on him. Despite the controversy surrounding him and Megan Thee Stallion, one thing is undeniable, he makes great
music.

What stands out most about him is how well he embodies what I’d call “Dark R&B.” His music is moody, toxic, seductive, vulnerable, and unapologetically emotional. It’s the kind of sound that feels like a late-night confessional that’s raw, but still smooth enough to keep you hooked. ‘Playboy’ (2021) captures all of that. The entire album is filled with songs I genuinely enjoyed, but
a few in particular stood out to me which are:

● “And This Is Just the Intro” – This opener sets the tone perfectly. It’s emotional, vulnerable, and doesn’t feel rushed which draws you straight into Tory’s headspace.

● “Distance” – Easily one of my favorites. The mix of pain and smooth vocals makes it both
heartbreaking and addictive. It is the kind of song you can put on repeat when you’re in your
feelings.

● “… The Make Up” (Interlude) – Even though it’s brief, it adds so much to the project. The thing that always gets me about interludes are that they’re too short — I always wish they were longer because they end up being some of the best moments on the album.

● “Lady of Neptune” – This track feels otherworldly. It’s smooth, spacey, and almost hypnotic, showing how experimental Tory can get while still keeping that R&B core.

● “Shooby Doowoop//One Last Heartbreak” – This is a two-part standout that blends vulnerability and toxicity in a way only Tory could pull off. It’s raw, messy, and emotional, exactly what makes ‘Playboy’ so powerful.

Each of these tracks shows a different side of Tory’s artistry, whether it’s his ability to confess,
seduce, or experiment with sound. Together, they highlight why ‘Playboy’ feels so complete from
start to finish.

The album’s composition is outstanding. It gives off the kind of vibe that stays with you long after it ends.
