Album Review: The Kid That Did

Marcellus Rayvon Register, better known as Babyface Ray, has a new album out entitled ‘The Kid That Did’. Released on September 13th, 2024, the album features 20 tracks and has a runtime of 58 minutes. The album is an inspirational tale of surviving rough circumstances and prevailing with your head held high at all costs.

The album showcases Ray’s rebirth as an artist, blending his signature Detroit sound with more polished production. “Groupies & Goofies” sets the tone for the album with its gritty lyrics and heavy beats which immediately grab the listener’s attention. I can hear the word play clear from the start that Ray is not holding back, delivering raw and unfiltered stories from his life and experiences. Two of my favorite tracks “Watching My Page” and “Delusional” explore themes of loyalty, struggle, and perseverance.

The collaborations on these tracks bring a fresh dynamic, with guest artists such as Hunxho, G Herbo, BossMan Dlow and Fabolous complementing Ray’s style while adding their own unique flavor. The production here is top-notch, with a mix of hard-hitting beats and melodic undertones that keep the listener engaged.

In the album, Ray experiments with different sounds and styles. Songs such as “Legacy” and “High Off Life” show a more introspective side, with slower tempos and more reflective lyrics. These tracks highlight Ray’s versatility as an artist, proving that he can switch from high-energy anthems to more thoughtful, contemplative pieces without losing his edge.

The album brings back the intensity with bangers such as “2 for 6” and “Fish Tail Fish Scale.” These songs are sure to be fan favorites, with their infectious hooks and relentless energy. Ray’s lyrical prowess shines through, as he paints vivid pictures of street life and the hustle that drives him.

Another track worth mentioning is “Nights Like This” which I can listen to for days. It leaves a lasting impression, reminding listeners of Ray’s journey and the obstacles he’s overcome. Overall, ‘The Kid That Did’ offers a well-rounded and compelling listening experience.
