Alcorn Holds Spring 2023 Graduation

Alcorn State University (ASU) held its Spring 2023 commencement exercise on Saturday, May 13th on the Lorman campus. The graduation consisted of 346 undergraduates and 104 graduates. The commencement began at 9:00 am at the Davey L. Whitney HPER Complex (New Gym). Each graduate was issued five (5) tickets for the event and masks were strongly encouraged.

The keynote speaker for the graduation was Tom Vilsak, the 32nd United States Secretary of Agriculture in the Biden Administration. From 2009-2017, he served in the same role during the Obama Administration. Secretary Vilsak has also served as the 40th governor of Iowa from 1999 to 2007. Under Secretary Vilsak’s leadership he has created well-paying job for American workers, strengthened rural and historically underserved communities and spearheaded a transformation of the food system by creating more. While at the ceremony, Secretary Vilsak addressed the graduates by saying, “You can win, you can learn, but you can never lose. It is incredibly important for this generation of college graduates to assist us in accepting the challenge facing American Agriculture and Forestry in rural America. We need greater diversity around the board ….We have work to do.”
