Coming into tonight’s 6:00 pm kickoff game against the Northwestern State University (NSU) Demons (0-2, 0-0), the Alcorn State University (ASU) Braves (1-1, 0-0) knew that a loss in Spinks-Casem Stadium was not an option no matter how daunting the opponent was. The Braves did not disappoint their fans for the first of only 3 games at the Stadium this season.
The first quarter mirrored the entire contest as it was a defensive struggle throughout the night. ASU was only able to muster 3 points in the quarter when kicker Christofer Thompson kicked a 40-yard field goal at the 3:42 mark to make the score 3-0, Braves. Not to be outdone, the Demons got on the scoreboard when wide receiver Kendrick Price scored on a 18-yard pass from quarterback Kaleb Fletcher with 49 seconds left in the quarter and with kicker Eddie Godina’s extra point conversion the score was now 3-7, Demons.
The Braves and the Demons turned the second quarter into a defensive slugfest where neither team would budge which produced no points going into halftime leaving the score 3-7, Demons.
The third quarter saw some slight theatrics of scoring as Northwestern’s Godina nailed a 37-yard field goal at the 11:42 mark making the score 6-10, Demons.
Entering the fourth quarter Braves’ kicker Thompson crushed a 24-yard field goal at the 14:06 mark to make the score 6-10, Demons. ASU was not done putting points on the board when quarterback Felix Harper scampered into the end zone at the 4:11 mark and with Thompson’s PAT (point after attempt) the final score was 13-10, Braves.
As a team the Braves had a total of 326 yards with no turn overs. Alcorn’s time of possession was 28 minutes with 15 first downs.
ASU’s next opponent will be on Saturday, September 18th at 7:00 pm at Hancock Whitney Stadium against the South Alabama Jaguars (2-0, 0-0). The game will be televised on ESPN3.
