Alcorn Sweeps LeMoyne-Owen for First Win of the Season

The Alcorn State University Volleyball team secured its first victory of the 2025 campaign on Friday, Saturday 19th, sweeping the LeMoyne-Owen Magicians in straight sets (25–20, 25–15, 25–20) at the Canale Arena.

Sophomore Ma’kayla Coats led the way offensively, recording a team-high 9 kills on 22 attempts to go with 4 service aces and 8 digs for a match-best 13 points. Courtney Carter added 4 kills and 4 points, while Kyla Davis chipped in 5 kills.

Alcorn spread the offense effectively, with Michaela Branner (4 kills, 2 service aces), Bailey Upshaw (2 kills, .333 hitting), and Rylan Jones (1.000 hitting on one attempt) all contributing at the net.

Defensively, the Braves held LeMoyne-Owen to an even .000 hitting percentage, forcing 34 kills against 34 errors. Tomoni Giddings anchored the back row with 12 digs, while Erin Mims added 5 digs and 6 assists.

Alcorn’s best set came in the second, when the Braves hit .318 with 10 kills on just 22 attempts.

The Lady Braves return to action Saturday, September 20th, in the CBU Tri-Match against the University of Arkansas at Monticello and host Christian Brothers University.
