Alcorn Women’s Basketball Team Makes History

After losing to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament, the Alcorn Lady Braves Basketball team (17-13, 14-4) was invited to participate in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT).

This marked Alcorn’s first ever appearance in the WNIT. The game took place on Saturday, March 21st at 3:00 pm from the Davey L. Whitney Complex in Lorman, Mississippi against the South Alabama Lady Jaguars (17-18, 5-13). The game had an attendance of 904 with it being aired on SWAC TV and WPRL 91.7 FM.

The game was nip and tuck for the majority of the first half with several lead changes. The Lady Jaguars went into halftime with a 34-29 advantage with a strong performance from Cordasia Harris who finished with 20 points. In the second half South Alabama outscored Alcorn 39-36. Despite a close match up, the Lady Braves were hindered by shooting 52 percent from the free-throw line (12 of 23) while missing several open jumpers and 16 layups. The Jaguars capitalized with 26 points off of turnovers and an 18-4 edge in second points. The Lady Braves lost the contest 73-65.

Alcorn’s statistical leaders were Kiarra Henderson who finished with 17 points while Nakia Cheatham had 14 rebounds and she had 6 points from 3-point land.
