The Alcorn State University (ASU) National Panhellenic Council (NPHC) of Fraternities hosted an event ‘Turn Up Your Style: Business+Style’ on September 3rd, at 7:00 pm in the Student Union Multipurpose Room. Since African American males sometimes have hardships making their mark in the professional world or transitioning from college to work, the purpose of this event was to make ASU male students aware of tips and tools necessary to dress professionally.

During the event, members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. explained to male students about the importance of being able to transition in the professional realm. Tips were given on how to approach interviews, the attire that is typically deemed professional or unprofessional, and how to pursue and achieve opportunities to land jobs and internships. Every male was provided one on one assistance from a member from each fraternity to learn how to tie bow ties and neck ties.

Tyler Wilson, a Senior Biology Pre-Med major and Polemarch of  Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Gamma Pi Chapter explained, “In coordination with other NPHC Fraternities on campus we hosted the ‘Turn Up Your Style: Business +Style’  event because we as a collective felt that it was needed. During the proceeding, we were able to use our skills and knowledge of the business realm to guide and shape young men into business professionals. The fellowship allowed us to mingle and become acquainted with other Alcorn males.”

James Upton, a Sophomore Pre- Physical Therapy major and President of the Eta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. explained, “The men that attended the event were guided on how to dress business professional and business casual. It feels good to guide our men on campus into the real world being that African American men are often misguided in some aspects of their lives.”
