The Alcorn State University (ASU) and the Alcorn Substance Abuse Prevention Program, presented by Erin Nichols, hosted an event ‘Stand For Safe Love’ on February 4th, at 6:00 pm in the Gold Room. The point of this event was to have engaging, serious conversations about the dangers of domestic violence and how to navigate it.
Guest Speaker, Ishaunna Gully, shared her inspiring story with students of how she fought against domestic violence with resilience, perseverance, and faith. She is a motivational speaker, domestic violence advocate/survivor, disability advocate, and peer mentor. Gully encouraged students to not let their troubles stop them from being great.
“I’m able to make an impact, inspire others, and share my story,” Gully emphasized. “Hopefully they don’t have their story be the same as mine.” In addition to Gully’s inspiring story, the event also included refreshments and sending students off with tips on how to navigate domestic violence.
Erin Nichols, a Junior Biology Pre-Professional major and SGA 1st Vice President, explained, “It’s better to jump in front of the problem and try to prevent it, instead of trying to pick up the pieces once it’s already done.”
