Alphas Host Miss Black and Gold Pageant 2018-2019

The Delta Kappa Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated at Alcorn State University (ASU) hosted its annual Miss Black and Gold Scholarship Pageant in the James L. Bolden Gold Room in the Campus Union on November 28th at 7:06 pm.

Delta Kappa hosts the event giving a young woman a chance to win a scholarship of up to $1000 and the title of Miss Black and Gold. This year’s pageant consisted of four young ladies, Taniya Foster, Keturah Moody, Troyrica Gaines, and Ty’rah Ray who showcased their multiple talents. The theme of the show was entitled “A Night on the Nile”.  The opening dance number was choreographed by Miss Black and Gold 2017-2018 Stephanie Ogbonmwan which saw the young women present an array of dance styles.  The contestants competed in four portions in the show which consisted of swimwear, talent, formal wear and a question and answer session. During intermission of the pageant the audience was entertained by the Black Illusion Dance Company and Alexis Randolph who performed an inspiring song. Dekari Courtney, a Sophomore from Pearl, Mississippi majoring in Education stated, “The show was very organized and well run. I enjoyed the talent portion with the contestants very much.”

After careful consideration by the judges the winners of the pageant were announced as Ty’Rah Ray, Miss Black and Gold 2018-2019, and Keturah Moody, Miss Delta Kappa 2018-2019. Ray, a Biology Pre-Med major from New Orleans, Louisiana stated, “Overall participating in the Miss Black and Gold Pageant was a great experience. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am beyond blessed and grateful to have been given the opportunity to be the current Miss Black and Gold of 2018-2019.” Moody, a Junior Mass Communications major from St. Paul, Minnesota stated, “I enjoyed doing the pageant. It was a chance to be more outgoing and get out of my comfort zone.”
