Martiyona Carter, a native of Greenville, Mississippi, graduated from Alcorn State University in the Spring of 2025 with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications. Over the years, she gained valuable experience working at the University’s radio station, WPRL 91.7 FM, where she was honored with awards for Best Radio Personality and Best Podcast. As the oldest of three siblings, Carter grew up surrounded by the success stories of her family, which led her to choose Alcorn. Currently, she serves as a Creative Services Producer at WABG News Station in Greenville. During her time at Alcorn, she was an active member of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and Impact. Her education and hands-on experience prepared her for a career in media, providing a solid foundation for her future endeavors. She attributes much of her success to the mentors and opportunities she encountered at Alcorn, and her deep connections with both faculty and fellow students have stayed with her throughout her career.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE ALCORN?
I chose Alcorn because it was a family tradition. Growing up, I heard the stories of my relatives’ journeys at Alcorn and how they graduated with successful jobs. I was always around campus for events and games, which made me feel connected to the University. Alcorn felt like the natural choice for me, and I knew it would provide a place where I could grow both personally and professionally.
WHAT ORGANIZATIONS WERE YOU A PART OF?
During my time at Alcorn, I was involved in two main organizations: NABJ (National Association of Black Journalists) and Impact. Both were instrumental in shaping my skills and expanding my network in the communications field.
HOW HAS ALCORN HELPED PREPRE YOU FOR YOUR CAREER?
Alcorn helped prepare me for my career by pushing me out of my comfort zone and introducing me to new experiences. If it weren’t for taking a radio production class, I’m not sure where I’d be today. That class helped me develop the skills needed for a career in media and even led to an internship with WLBT in Jackson, Mississippi. Alcorn provided me with practical opportunities to grow, and it gave me the tools to succeed in the industry.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU ENJOYED MOST ABOUT ALCORN?
The family dynamic at Alcorn was one of the things that I enjoyed the most. In the Mass Communications Department, we truly made the best out of what we had. The professors were incredibly dedicated and pushed us to be the best versions of ourselves. The student body felt like family to me, and that bond stayed strong throughout all of my four years at the University. It was a place where I always felt supported.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR CURRENT OR FUTURE STUDENTS ON ‘THE YARD’?
My advice would be to give it your all. Build meaningful relationships with your professors and fellow students, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when needed. Stand out, be different. The experiences you gain at Alcorn will help shape your future, so embrace them.
