ASU Students Receive Awards at MAB Day

The Mississippi Association of Broadcasters (MAB) hosted their 3rd annual MAB Day Student Conference on November 13th at Jackson State University.

MAB Day occurs when students from universities statewide have a chance to network with experienced journalists, win media awards and scholarship opportunities. Nine students from the Alcorn State University (ASU) chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) attended the Conference, spending the day learning from potential employers.

The Conference had breakout sessions offering information on having an executive presence among employers, tips on how to utilize AI responsibly in Journalism, how to improve news reels and other helpful presentations. It also featured the Young Professionals Panel, where Journalists under 30 years of age encourage and educate aspiring professionals. The Journalists who were nominated for this by the General Managers of their respective stations are Ross McLeod, Emily Caballero, and Alcorn Alumna Keaundria Milloy.

During lunch time, Executive Director Amanda Fontaine and Board Chair Dr. Elayne Anthony presented awards and scholarships. ASU brought back 2 awards: Rashawn Gallapsy placed third in the Television Sports Story category and Larissa Chillous placed 3rd in the Television Feature Story category. Marissa Smith and Brandon Buie were also recognized for being selected as inaugural MAB Fellows. They will be paired with a mentor who is in the news industry to polish their Journalistic skills.
