ASU’s Leadership Discussion Panel is a program held for Alcorn State University students to come and ask questions and receive answers from successful leaders that comes from different walks of life. Students come to receive advice and important information that will help them on different type of careers that they are interested in. This program helps young students to strive above the statistics and gives information on how to be successful in the future.
Fred Galloway, a senior Mass Communications major from Texas and Denzel Turner the current Mr. Junior, opened the program by introducing themselves as well as the members on the panel which consisted of Special Agent Anita Pope of the United States Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration, Dr. Anthony Pinn, professor and author and rapper Bun B. Great advice was given from each panelist and the students soaked in the wisdom that they were given. Bun B stated, “Always be yourself. Never let anyone tell you that you can’t make it because if you put your mind to it then you can achieve anything you want.”
Bun B went on to discuss the importance of an education by stating, “I can’t really say that college life is for me. So I really didn’t have the boost or motivation to go to college but I think that if I weren’t in the position that I’m in today then definitely I would have gone to college and graduated. I would be sitting in the seats that you all are seating in today because I would be glad to receive my education.”
As the event was coming to a close Special Agent Pope gave encouraging words to the young ladies in the audience by stating, “As young ladies you should be careful of what you post on social media because that’s what’s stopping us now from being hired in the positions that we want. This is not just to the ladies either but as well as the young men. You don’t have to post everything you do or say on social media every hour or minute.” William Fisher, a sophomore majoring in Nursing from Miami, Florida said, “I really enjoyed myself tonight, I received wonderful information and tips for the future. I would love to have another event next semester because this is valuable for everyone.”
