Born to Build, Ready to Rebuild: Avantavis T. Carter

Avantavis T. Carter, born to parents Alisha Carter, Denetriotta Pendleton, and Christopher Pendleton, is a Junior majoring in Elementary Education at Alcorn State University (ASU).

Proudly hailing from Hazlehurst, Mississippi, Carter discovered his calling early in life. “I chose this major because of my unwavering passion for education. From a young age, I recognized the power of education and the doors it can open,” he shared. To him, education isn’t just a career path but a mission to give back to the field that helped shape him for greatness.

Throughout his time at Alcorn, he has been a dedicated leader and advocate for student success. He is actively involved in the Student Government Association (SGA), the Student National Education Association, Residence Life, and he serves as a Brave Ambassador. Carter is a Spring 2025 Initiate of the Delta Kappa Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. His involvement reflects a commitment to service, leadership, and uplifting the campus community.

Running for SGA office under the platform “Rebuilding A Better Alcorn Together,” Carter focused on student issues such as athletic support, facility improvements, access to resources, and enhancing the overall student experience. “It was centered on controlling what we can control and creating real change for our student body,” he explained.

Now in a position of leadership, he’s most excited about the opportunity to directly advocate for student’s needs. “Having been involved in the SGA since my Freshman year, I’ve built valuable relationships and developed support systems that are key to the changes we all want to see,” he said. “Now, I have the privilege and responsibility to act on those ideas with authority and purpose.”

His greatest inspiration comes from his mother, whose strength and encouragement continues to guide him. “Being away at college has its challenges, especially since I’m undeniably a mama’s baby at heart,” he admitted. One of the driving forces behind his decision to attend Alcorn was his mother’s dream of going to the university herself. “As I prepare to enter my Senior year, I remind myself daily that I’m doing this not just for me, but for the legacy I want to leave for both my family and community.”

He finds strength in the words, “If God be for you, who can be against you!”—a quote that anchors him in faith and reminds him of his purpose through every challenge and triumph.

After earning his bachelor’s degree, Carter plans to re-enroll at Alcorn to pursue a master’s degree in Political Science. His long-term vision includes returning to Hazlehurst to serve as a dedicated educator while also building a fulfilling career in student affairs. With his drive, leadership, and heart for service, he’s determined to make a meaningful impact in education.
