The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) held its annual Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament in The Bartow Arena in Birmingham, Alabama on March 10th-13th with the winners getting an automatic bid to participate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament which some have notably called ‘The Big Dance’.
The Lady Braves’ (7-13, 7-8) first round quarterfinals opponent was the Southern University Lady Jaguars (12-10, 11-4). The game took place on Thursday, March 11th at 11:00 am and was televised on ESPN3. Due to the Lady Braves’ sluggish start in the onset of the game it cost them dearly. Despite Kirdis Clarks’ 15 points and Cayla Obillo and Aja Wheeler’s 8 points respectively the Lady Braves didn’t have the hot hands to pull them back within striking range and lost to the Lady Jags 73-59.
Alcorn’s men’s basketball (6-7,6-12) opponent in the first round quarterfinals was the Texas Southern University Tigers (14-8, 10-3). The contest was played on Thursday, March 11th at 2:00 pm on ESPN3. Unfortunately for the Braves their leading scorer and rebounder, Troymain Crosby was unable to play due to an injury. Even with Forward, Tyree Corbett contributing 23 points in 30 minutes and Guard, Byron Joshua’s 17 points in 31 minutes, it was not enough to stop a resilient Tigers’ team which eliminated Alcorn from the Tournament, 78-55.
