Braves Bounce Back with a Vengeance

The Alcorn State University Braves (6-3, 5-2) showed the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) why they are the Eastern Division leaders by pummeling the Texas Southern Tigers (3-6, 2-6) 65-13.

In the first quarter the Braves got out of the gate fast when at the 13:39 mark quarterback Lenorris Footman hit Jordan Payne with a 7 yard touchdown pass and with a Haiden McCraney PAT (point after attempt) the score was 7-0, Braves. Alcorn’s demolition of the Tigers was only beginning because with only one minute and 19 seconds prior to the last score the Braves’ Lamarvin Ashley blocked a punt and scored and with a successful McCraney PAT the score was now 14-0, Braves. Alcorn scored yet again at the 8:25 mark when Lenorris Footman scored on a 1 yard run and with a good McCraney extra point the score was now 21-0, Braves. At the end of the first quarter (2:24 mark) McCraney kicked a 36 yard field goal to make the score 24-0 to end the first quarter.

The second quarter was a mirror image of the first quarter for the Braves as they scored yet again at the 7:57 mark when Footman scored on a 7 yard run and with McCraney’s extra point going right through the uprights the score was now 31-0, Braves. With only 19 seconds left in the second quarter Footman hit Brandon Vessell with a 14 yard touchdown pass and with a successful McCraney PAT the score to end the quarter was 38-0, Braves.

At the beginning of the third quarter the Braves were scoring at will. At the 14:38 mark Darryan Ragsdale scored on a 68 yard scamper to the end zone and with an automatic PAT by McCraney the score was now 45-0, Braves. The Tigers finally got on the scoreboard at the 10:46 mark when Darrell Robinson scored on a 2 yard run but kicker Eric Medina’s PAT was blocked therefore making the score 45-6, Braves. Continuing their offensive domination the Braves’ Arron Baker scored at the 6:03 mark with a 2 yard run but McCraney’s extra point attempt was blocked making the score now 51-6, Braves. With 3:45 left in the third quarter the Tigers scored again when Homer Causey scored on a two yard run and with a Medina PAT being successful the score was now 51-13, Braves.

Alcorn continued to score in the fourth quarter as Joe Price scored on a 4 yard run at the 11:23 mark and with a  good McCraney extra point the score was now 58-13, Braves. The last score of the game came at the 9:43 mark when Terrell Williams scored on a 23 yard fumble return and with a successful McCraney extra point the final score was 65-13, Braves.

The Braves next game will be on Military/Senior Day against the Alabama A&M Bulldogs (2-7, 2-5) at Spinks-Casem Stadium at 2:00 pm. With a win the Braves will wrap up the Eastern Conference title and guarantee themselves a trip back to Houston, Texas for the SWAC Championship game. This will be the Braves’ last home game of the 2015 season.
