Braves Brutalize Jags in McNair’s Return

Saturday, November 9th marked the return of one of Alcorn’s most successful coaches, Fred McNair. McNair, the interim football coach of the Southern University (SU) Jaguars (Jags) (1-8, 0-6), marched into Spinks-Casem Stadium looking for his first victory of the season against the Alcorn State University (ASU) Braves (4-6, 3-3) to no avail.

The Jags hoped on the score board first in the first quarter at the 5:14 mark when Running Back Trey Holly scored on a 2-yard run into the endzone and with kicker Nathan Zimmer’s extra point the score was 7-0, Jags.

The second quarter saw the Braves score at the 9:04 mark when Offensive Lineman Cameran Rogers scored on a 1-yard run and with Kicker Lorenzo Garcia’s extra point the score was now tied at 7. Alcorn scored again at the 4:23 mark when Wide Receiver Jarvis Rush scored on a 4-yard scamper into the end zone and with Garcia’s successful extra point the score was now 7-14, Braves. Right before the half the Jags got on the board with a 42-yard field goal from Zimmer making the score 10-14, Braves.

The Braves dominated the third quarter by scoring at the 8:53, 5:58 and 1:20 marks making the score 17-35 which was the final since no one scored in the fourth quarter.

Statistically, on Offense Quarterback Jaylon Tolbert had 119 yards on 12 completions with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, Running Back Reggie Davis led all rushers with 110 yards, while Wide Receiver Tyran Warren had 2 receptions for 35 yards. On Defense, Linebacker Cedric Roberts led all tackles with 8.

ASU’s next opponent will be the Grambling State University (GSU) Tigers (7-3, 4-2) on Saturday, November 15th at 2:00 at Spinks-Casem Stadium. You can listen to the game on WPRL 91.7 FM or wprl.org.
