Braves fall 24-14 to Jags

On Saturday, October 19th, the Alcorn State University (ASU) Braves (4-4,3-1) faced off against the Southern University (SU) Jaguars (4-3,3-0) at A.W. Mumford Stadium which gave the Braves their first conference loss.

Alcorn got on the board first after a 64-yard rushing touchdown by Tight End Tavarious Griffin which gave the Braves a 7-0 lead with 3:34 left in the first quarter.

The Jaguars tied the game with a rushing touchdown by Quarterback Noah Bodden at the beginning of the second quarter. SU kept their offense rolling throughout the second quarter and took the lead with a 37-yard passing touchdown from Bodden to Wide Receiver Datraveon Brown making the score 14-7.

The Braves were able to tie the game with an 8-yard rushing touchdown by Quarterback Xzavier Vaughn before halftime.

The Braves and Jaguars offense both posted a scoreless third quarter but in the fourth quarter the Jags took the lead when Kicker Joshua Griffin made a 39-yard field goal making the score 17-14. With 2:42 left in the contest the Jags cemented the win when Running Back Kendric Rhymes rushed for a 51-yard touchdown making the final score 24-14.

Linebacker Stemarion Edwards led the Braves’ defense with a total of 14 tackles and a fumble recovery. Defensive back Edwin Summerour had 10 tackles while Defensive Lineman Gideon Spotsville had 9.

The Braves look for redemption as they travel to Mobile, Alabama to take on the Alabama State University (ASU) Hornets (3-3,2-1) in the Port City Classic at Ladd-Peebles Stadium Saturday, November 2nd at 4:00 pm.
