The Alcorn State University (ASU) Braves (4-3, 5-6) marched into Spinks-Casem Stadium on Saturday, November 15th at 2:00 pm to battle the Grambling State University (GSU) Tigers (4-3, 7-4) looking to extend their recent winning streak and they didn’t let their fans down.
Grambling scored at the 5:36 mark in the first quarter as Kicker Theodore Caballero nailed a 37-yard field goal to make the score 3-0, Tigers. Alcorn, not to be outdone, scored with 54 seconds left in the quarter when Running Back Jacorian Sewell scored on a 8-yard run and with Kicker Lorenzo Garcia’s extra point the score was now 3-7, Braves.
Alcorn scored the only points in the second quarter at the 6:29 mark when Running Back Reggie Davis scampered into the end zone on a 1-yard run and with Garcia’s successful extra point the score was now 3-14, Braves, at the half.
The third quarter saw the G-Men dominate the scoring as Caballero scored with a 29-yard field goal making the score 6-14, Braves, and then Defensive Back Tyrell Raby scored at the 2:21 mark when he rumbled into the endzone with a 10-yard fumble recovery.
Grambling continued their scoring dominance into the fourth quarter as Caballero scored yet again, this time at the 8:03 mark with a 27-yard field goal making the score 16-14, Tigers. ASU picked up the steam and scored at the 4:50 mark when Davis scored on a 1-yard run and with Garcia’s extra point, the score was now 16-21, Braves. Alcorn nailed the coffin shut with the win when Defensive Lineman Eric Thomas Jr. scored on a 2-yard fumble recovery with 2 seconds remaining in the game making the final score 16-27, Braves.
Offensively, Quarterback Jaylon Tolbert completed 23 passes for 167 yards, Davis had 80 yards rushing with 2 touchdowns, and Wide Receiver Jarvis Rush had 10 receptions for 83 yards. Defensively, Linebacker Stemarion Edwards had 15 solo tackles. The Braves had 318 total yards for the game.
Alcorn’s next game is in two weeks at the Capital City Classic against in-state rival Jackson State University (JSU) Tigers (6-1, 8-2) at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson, Mississippi at 2:30 pm. You can listen to the game at wprl.org or on WPRL 91.7 FM.
