The Alcorn State University (ASU) Braves (5-3, 4-1) were looking to inch closer to the Western Division title by beating the Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU) Delta Devils (1-7, 1-4) on Saturday, October 28th at 2:00 pm in Spinks-Casem Stadium. With the win, this would make it their 4th straight victory against Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opponents.
The Braves flexed their muscles early as they dominated the first quarter. ASU got on the board first at the 9:24 mark when Kicker Noah Kiani booted a 23-yard field goal to make the early score, 3-0, Braves. Two minutes and 19 seconds later the Braves scored when Running Back Jacorian Sewell broke loose on a 62-yard run to pay dirt and with Kiani’s extra point the score was now 10-0, Braves.
The second quarter was full of missed opportunities for the Braves but the Delta Devils capitalized on them and put some points on the board with 1 second remaining before halftime when Kicker Alexander Davis scored with a 38-yard field goal making the score 10-3, Braves.
Alcorn kept MVSU scoreless in the third quarter but that didn’t stop them from putting points up at the 4:25 mark when Quarterback Aaron Allen scored on an 11-yard scamper into the endzone and with a successful Kiani kick the score was 17-3, Braves.
The Braves ended the scoring dominance in the fourth quarter at the 7:24 mark when Running Back Jarveon Howard rumbled into the endzone on a 30-yard run and with Kiani’s extra point the final score for the contest was 24-3, Braves. With the win, the Braves are now tied with the Southern University (SU) Jaguars (5-3, 4-1) for first place in the Western Division in the SWAC.
Offensive statistical leaders were Allen who completed 17 passes for 171 yards and 1 interception, Howard, who had 97-yards rushing with 1 touchdown, and Wide Receiver Monterio Hunt had 5 catches for 76-yards. Defensively, Linebacker Stemarion Edwards lead all tackles with 11 and 1.5 sacks.
Alcorn has a huge game next Saturday, November 4th at Spinks-Casem Stadium at 2:00 pm when they take on Southern to see who will have sole possession of first place in the Western Division. You can catch the game on WPRL 91.7 FM or wprl.org.
