What a day to be a Brave? On Saturday, September 21st at 5:00 pm at Spinks-Casem Stadium in Lorman, Mississippi the Alcorn State University (ASU) Braves (2-2,1-0) competed in a constant game of back and forth against the Prairie View A&M University (PV) Panthers (1-3,1-1) which led to a thrill ride of entertainment.
Alcorn scored on their first possession of the game on a 30 yard reception to make the score 7-0, Braves. When the Panthers received the ball on the next possession, Quarterback Jalen Morton threw an interception which Defensive Back Qwynterrio Cole caught and gave the Braves excellent field position at the Panthers’ 31 yard line. Alcorn scored a few plays later making the score 14-0, Braves.
PV’s Morton threw yet another interception and ASU’s Defensive Back Keyron Kinsler picked it off resulting in Kicker Corey McCullough nailing a 33 yard field goal to push the Braves’ lead to 17-0.
The Panthers exhibited heart and fight as they climbed back into the contest. PV scored on a 2nd and 44 as Morton threw and connected with Wide Receiver Tony Mullins for a 66 yarder. The Panthers were ready to play as they cut the score to 17-7. PV’s defense was locked and loaded as they didn’t allow Alcorn to score on the next drive. On the Panthers’ next possession, Morton hit Wide Receiver Kelejawan Chriss resulting in a 17-13 score. The Panthers then blocked a Braves’ punt, received possession of the ball and scored again. The Panthers were now leading the Braves 19-17.
The Braves would not go down without a fight as they recovered a fumble at the Panthers’ 5 yard line. Alcorn scored, leading the half 24-19. Alcorn’s Cole was on fire as he entered the second half by intercepting another pass from Morton. However, on the next possession, the Braves fumbled and PV recovered which resulted in the Panthers scoring making the score 27-24.
The game continued back and forth, touchdown for touchdown, possession for possession with a litany of score changes. The Panthers scored again, 34-24. The Braves scored again, 31-34. ASU scored again, 38-34. PV scored again, 41-38.
As time dwindled off the clock, the Braves made a clutch play when Quarterback Felix Harper threw to Wide Receiver Tim McNair for the game-winning touchdown making the final score 45-41, Braves.
Alcorn’s Felix Harper completed 25 passes for 280 yards and threw for 2 touchdowns. Senior receiver, LeCharles Pringle aided with a career high 144 yards and a touchdown. On the defensive side of the ball, Solomon Muhammad led with a career high 18 tackles. Junior, Juwan Taylor followed him with 11 tackles.
The Braves’ next opponent will be the Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU) Delta Devils (0-3,0-0) at Spinks-Casem Stadium on Saturday, September 28th at 6:00 pm.
