On Thursday, October 5th at 6:30 pm at The New ASU Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama, the Alcorn State University Braves (ASU) (4-2, 4-0) played a nationally televised game on ESPNU against the Alabama State University Hornets (0-5, 0-2) which presented a David versus Goliath scenario.
The Braves jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter at the 13:15 mark when Quarterback Lenorris Footman scored on a 50 yard run and with a successful PAT (point after attempt) by Kicker Corey McCullough the score early was 7-0, Braves. Later in the first quarter at the 5:50 mark McCullough kicked a 32 yard field goal to make the score 10-0, Braves.
ASU continued their scoring dominance in the second quarter when Wide receiver Norlando Veals caught a 21 yard pass from Footman at the 13:15 mark and with a McCullough extra point the score was now 17-0, Braves. Alcorn continued its scoring onslaught when Footman scored on an 8 yard run at the 6:00 mark and with a McCullough PAT the score at halftime was 24-0, Braves.
The Hornets entered the third quarter on a mission by scoring first at the 5:02 mark when Running back Ezra Gray scored on a 59 yard run to the end zone and with Kicker Hunter Hanson’s successful PAT the score was now 27-7, Braves.
Alabama State realized the writing on the wall and made a valiant effort in the fourth quarter with the final score of the game coming at the 14:17 mark when Hanson scored on a 27 yard field goal making the final score 24-10, Braves.
Alcorn State’s next opponent will be the Prairie View A&M University Panthers (2-3, 2-1). The game, which will be the Brave’s Homecoming, will take place on Saturday, October 14th at Spinks-Casem Stadium in Lorman, Mississippi at 2:00 pm.
