Cleansing Natural Hair with Apple Cider Vinegar

The first rule to being natural is knowing what is good for your hair and what can cause damage to it. Keeping a consistent wash process can make or break your hair and skipping a step can dry out or break your hair off. Cleaning your scalp is one of the most important steps to a wash process and that job belongs to shampoo.

I have a love hate relationship with non-organic shampoo. They are not terrible, in fact, they smell amazing and they are easy to get a hold of. I use shampoo every three weeks but I wash my hair once a week. Most non-organic shampoos contain parabens and propylene glycol (antifreeze). Not only can these chemicals lead to cancer and other illnesses but they also strip your scalp of its natural oils that make your hair so luscious. My alternative to using shampoo is apple cider vinegar, which you can get at any grocery store for about five dollars or less depending on the container size.

Apple cider vinegar is packed with nutrients such as Vitamin B, Vitamin C and Potassium. The gentle acid is extremely easy to add into your wash routine and all you have to do is purchase some apple cider vinegar, a spray bottle and your favorite natural oil.

First you should start off with pouring 2-4 tablespoons of raw apple cider vinegar into a clean spray bottle. Next add 2 tablespoons of cool water and 3-5 drops of tea tree oil. I recommend that you use the tea tree oil because it’s specifically designed for an itchy scalp and dandruff. After you shake the spray bottle well, spray the ingredients directly onto your scalp, once your scalp is completely saturated, gently massage the scalp with your fingertips. Be cautious of getting the apple cider vinegar in your eyes and be prepared for the strong smell.

After the cocktail has sat in your hair for 5-10 minutes, thoroughly wash it out with warm water then continue with your normal conditioning routine. Now watch your hair shine and enjoy your frizz free fro.
