Dean of School of Arts and Sciences Wins Contribution to Science Award

Dr. Babu Patolla, Dean for the School of Arts and Sciences at Alcorn State University (ASU), is the recent recipient of the Mississippi Academy of Sciences (MAS) award.

On August 5, 2021, Dr. Patolla received the Contribution to Science award from the Mississippi Academy of Sciences (MAS) at their 85th annual meeting in Biloxi, Mississippi. MAS is an academy that keeps up communication among scientists around Mississippi. Every year the academy holds annual meetings where they present workshops, scientific papers, and addresses items that would interest their members.

The MAS Contribution to Science award has been around since the annual meetings began in 1936. The recipients of this award are nominated by current members of MAS. Nominees of the Contribution to Science award should “exhibit a commitment to the acquisition, dissemination, and application of scientific knowledge.”

Dr. Patolla fits this description because of his extensive work at Alcorn and surrounding areas. He has secured over $3 million dollars in external funding for Summer workshops for K-12 Math and Science teachers in and around areas located near ASU. He has also published and reviewed articles for peer reviewed journals, as well as science related text books.

“I love the work that I do for Alcorn and for the sciences. As a lifelong member of the Mississippi Academy of Sciences, it felt nice to be recognized for the work that I have done and am doing,” stated Dr. Patolla.
