Gemario Brooks is the Senior Radio Producer for WPRL 91.7 FM at Alcorn State University. He is from Port Gibson, Mississippi. Brooks graduated from Port Gibson High School in 2003 and Alcorn in 2008. While at Alcorn, he was a three-time Dean’s Scholar and received his Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications. After graduation, he began working with WPRL 91.7 FM in August of 2008 and has been there ever since. While working there, he’s been a three-time Staff Member of the Year award winner, and he also has won the Best Producer of the Year award for the Best Radio Sports Talk Show in Mississippi. He is the only son of Gwendolyn Brooks and the late George Brooks.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH ALCORN?
I’ve been at Alcorn for 17 years.
WHAT DOES YOUR JOB ENTAIL?
My job duties are to entertain the audience in the evening and night hours with the best Hip-Hop and R&B. I also produce all of Alcorn’s sporting event such as football, basketball, softball, and baseball games. I also produce all of the student shows.
WHEN AT WORK, HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE YOURSELF?
It’s all about having a good mindset for me. I wake up every morning and say a good prayer that’s going to help me make it through the day.
IN TERMS OF SUCCESSES, WHICH ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?
For the most part, the growth and improvement that I’m producing for myself. Ever since I began working at Alcorn, I’ve built some good characteristics, not just for myself, but for my family and friends. It’s still a long process, but I’m continuing to work and build on the future to come.
WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE THAT YOU CAN GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO JUST STARTED THEIR CAREER AT ALCORN?
Be patient and stay focused. But most of all, Pray.
