Larry K. Sanders is an Assistant Professor of Mass Communications at Alcorn State University. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He has worked as a contributing writer in several newspapers and taught several years at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas and a year and a half at East Texas Baptist University which is also in Marshall, Texas. Sanders has served on several academic committees in his collegiate tenure which include the Advising Committee, Academic Committee, and the Grievance Committee.
He is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), International Communication Association (ICA), Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (AEJMC), American Association of University Professors (AAUP), a Prince Hall Mason and Alpha Phi Alpha, Inc. Fraternity. His teaching interests include Feature Writing, Workshop in Mass Communications, Internship in Mass Communications, Public Relations and the Theory of Mass Communications. His teaching philosophy is that all students are educable. He is currently doing research on the influence that the media has on African American males within the United States.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN EMPLOYED AT ALCORN? I have been employed at Alcorn for 20 years.
WHAT DOES YOUR JOB ENTAIL? My job entails teaching a multitude of courses that consist of, but aren’t limited to, Introduction to Mass Communications, Mass Media Writing, Broadcast Announcing, Introduction to Research Methods, Oral Communications and Radio Production Lab.
WHEN YOU’RE AT WORK, HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE YOURSELF? Honestly, the students motivate me to do and be at my best at all times. I enjoy being around them.
IN TERMS OF SUCCESS, WHICH ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? One accomplishment that I’m particularly proud of is seeing the Mass Communications students graduate and get jobs within the field. Knowing that I’ve had a small part in their success brings a certain joy to my heart.
WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE THAT YOU CAN GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO JUST STARTED THEIR CAREER AT ALCORN? Work hard, love what you do and your job will reciprocate in kind.
