As young adults who are attempting to better themselves through higher education, we all know the rigors that come with being a successful college student. From attempting to make stelar grades, joining organizations, finding internships and socializing with friends, it all can be somewhat taxing. So, I’ve come up with 5 methods to manage drama while pursuing an academic career.
1.) SET BOUNDARIES
Be clear and define your limits with friends and acquaintances. It’s okay to say no to social engagements if you need to focus on studying. Protect your time and energy by not getting involved in every issue that arises.
2. PRIORITIZE SELF-CARE
My number 1 rule is to always prioritize you. Make time for activities that help you relax and de-stress. Whether it’s exercise, reading, or spending time in nature, taking care of your mental and physical health will make you more resilient to drama.
3. CHOOSE YOUR FRIENDS WISELY
Always surround yourself with supportive and positive people who understand your academic goals. Hanging around like-minded people will help you expand your understanding which will later result in you not having the mental capacity to hang around people that thrive on gossip or create unnecessary conflict.
4. COMMUNICATE ASSERTIVELY
Always be straightforward. If you find yourself in a conflict, address it directly and calmly. Express your feelings and needs without being aggressive or defensive. Effective communication can often resolve misunderstandings before they escalate into full-blown drama.
5. FOCUS ON YOUR GOALS
Lastly, keep your academic and personal goals in mind. When drama arises, ask yourself if getting involved will help you achieve your objectives.
Always remember that your end goal is to graduate and you should let absolutely NOTHING stand in your way of achieving that goal. Now with that being said, go out there and get that degree.
