Dr. Seuss’s birthday is a nationwide reading event that is celebrated annually during the week of March 2-9. Dr. Suess, who was a renowned author and cartoonist, is best known for encouraging a generation of children to learn how to peruse and enjoy books.
Friends of the J. D. Boyd Library Student Organization sent out a request to all students on the campus of Alcorn State University (ASU) to take time to read during ‘Read Across America’. Floyce Thomas, who is the Co-Chair and Student Advisor of the group, submitted a list of books to read as a leisure time encouragement project. Some of the books Thomas submitted were:
Stephen King ——– Different Seasons
Coben Harlan ——- Run Away
Owens Delia ——– Where the Crawdads Sing
Christina Lauren —- True Love Experiment
Stephen King ——– Nightmares
Emily Hemry ——– Happy Place
Nora Roberts ——– Hide Away
Samantha Shannon — The Falling Mask
James Patterson —— Count Down
Sandra Brown ——- Out of Nowhere
Deborah Royce —— Ruby Falls
Thomas stated, “Reading opens many doors for the individual. It provides new beginnings, boosts imagination, and develops an unbelievable experience of being successful. I so often reflect on historical events from slavery to the White House. Slaves taught themselves how to read by observation. Today, we keep reading and moving forward by being observant, gaining knowledge, applying what we are learning, the meaning of words, and how to use them. Most of all understanding what is placed before us. READ! READ! READ! It truly makes life a little bit easier.”
