On Thursday, January 23rd the Alcorn Chapter of Girl’s Coalition hosted its’ annual, ‘Living in My Melanin’ event. This event took place at 6:00 pm in the James L. Bolden Campus Union. Put into place last year, the ladies of Girl’s Coalition thought it would be an outstanding idea to host an event that created a safe space for ladies to come and share their concerns and opinions about being a black woman in society.

The organization is known on campus for its commitment to inspire and uplift collegiate women through mentorship while uplifting and empowering the beautiful ladies of Alcorn’s institution. This event further exemplified this commitment.

The opening greeting came from Girl’s Coalition President, Destyni Bowie, who stated, “We are so happy you all have joined us. Please be reminded that this is a safe and judgement free zone.” Bowie, along with Executive Board members, Jada Cooper and Ibreona Wilburn, lead the discussion where they asked a total of 10 questions, allowing everyone a fair chance to agree and disagree with their fellow peers’ answers.

As the event progressed, the audience were asked questions such as, “Is the black woman angry or passionate?”, “Is colorism still an issue and where did it derive from?”, and “Why are you proud to be a black woman?” Many of the young ladies jumped at answering the questions while others soaked in the knowledge.

In closing, the ladies took pictures with one another and conversed about the outing. Bowie stated, “I truly look forward to this event each year because the answers are never the same from one individual to the next. The girls always embrace each other and remind themselves how beautiful they are, and I couldn’t ask for more as their president.”

The Alcorn Chapter of Girl’s Coalition is preparing for their annual Women’s Empowerment Week. They are encouraging all ladies to join them in their upcoming events. You can follow them on Instagram @alcorn.girlscoalition.
