Kyra Maurice, born to parents Lionel Maurice and Latoya Johnson, is a Senior Biology Health Science major at Alcorn State University (ASU).
Raised in Gulfport, Mississippi, Maurice chose to become a Biology Health Science major because of a lifelong love for science and a passion for helping people. “With the Health Science concentration, it can help me focus on what exact field I want to go in,” stated Maurice.
She is an active member of several campus organizations, including The TREND Model Organization and she is a Spring 2024 Initiate of the Gamma Phi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Her decision to step into the world of pageantry was a groundbreaking decision in her life. “Honestly, me wanting to start being more social and trying to network with more people who are from all over the world pushed me to start doing pageants,” she explained.
Since entering the pageant world, Maurice has grown as an individual. “It helped me learn how to speak publicly, do better in interviews, and be more confident,” she says. Pageantry taught her that she can achieve anything she sets her mind to and reminded her not to be so hard on herself. However, her journey has not been without challenges. “My first biggest obstacle was trying to find the right pageant system that’s meant for me and having the right guidance. In order to get over these obstacles, I had to do research and go through trial and error,” Maurice reflected. These experiences have equipped her with resilience and perseverance.
Inspiration in Maurice’s life comes from her family, especially her parents, siblings, grandmother, and aunt. “Everything that I talked about with them I am now doing, and I wish they were here to see it. All of their motivation helps me to keep going above and beyond,” she said. Maurice lives by the quote, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take,” by Wayne Gretzky, which pushes her to strive toward her goals.
After graduating from Alcorn, Maurice plans to attend graduate school and explore the world through travel. This combination of education and adventure reflects her drive to make the most of life and continue growing as a person.
