Once again the Alcorn State University Braves (3-1, 2-0) proved that they are a power to be reckoned with as they manhandled the Concordia College Hornets (0-5) at Spinks-Casem Stadium 40-7. The Braves led in every statistical category as they played with the Hornets like a rag doll.
The annihilation began with 4:00 minutes left in the first quarter as Marquis Warford scored on an 8 yard run but with an Anthony Williams III point after attempt (PAT) being no good the score was 6-0, Braves. The Braves got out to an uncharacteristically slow start and didn’t score again until the second quarter.
At the 7:43 mark in the second quarter Marquis Warford scored on a 62 yard pass from quarterback John Gibbs Jr. and with a McCraney PAT being good the score was now 13-0, Braves. The Braves at times seemed sluggish and disinterested in the Hornets maybe because they realized that this was a team that they were destined to beat. The score at halftime remained 13-0.
In the third quarter the Braves came out rejuvenated. At the 14:43 mark to begin the third, Darryn Ragsdale scored on an 85 yard run but with the McCraney PAT being blocked the score was now 19-0. Then at the 8:45 mark Jordan Payne caught a 69 yard pass from John Gibbs Jr. and with a successful McCraney PAT the score was now 26-0, Braves.
The fourth quarter brought more of the Braves’ dominance because at the 14:57 mark Arron Baker scored on a 1 yard run and with a McCraney PAT being good this made the score 33-0, Braves. Then 7 minutes and 10 seconds later the Braves scored yet again when Jordan Payne caught a 43 yard pass from Lenorris Footman and with a McCraney PAT being successful the score was now 40-0, Braves. The Hornets finally got on the score board at the 2:49 mark when Marquis Web scored on a 32 yard pass from Jarvis Chambers and with a Pablo Grajales PAT being good the final score was 40-7.
The Braves didn’t play their best football but this should improve with their next opponent. Alcorn will play Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) foe Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Golden Lion Stadium on Saturday, October 3, at 4:00 pm in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
